Three Scottish Mills
A letter
from Angela Smith |
|
It may be that you have
seen this mill near John O'Groats during your
Scottish travels, but I thought I'd send the photo
anyway. During our recent cruise we called in at
Scrabster and had a coach trip as far as Duncansby
Head. Our guide mentioned that three water mills we
passed were possibly going to be restored for use in
tourism of one sort or another. This one is just
west of John O'Groats on the main A836 road at ND
371733. It is marked 'Mill' on the 1:50,000 map.
Another one was on a
right-angled bend in Ham, coming down from Dunnet
Head, turn east along a narrow yellow road and it's
on the bend turning south, at ND 239737. There's a
large millpond. You can see it on Google Streetview.
The third one I
haven't yet located on the map. I was sitting on
the right side of the coach and saw it out of the
window, but then there was a right bend and the mill
was on the other side of the coach!

Editor:
I think that this is the third mill that Angela
glimpsed, which I photographed in 2015. According
to the 2018 AIA Guide to Caithness, it is Castletown
Mill at ND 202681, a large L-plan 3 storey mill of
1818, enlarged in 1885. It had a central double
kiln and two timber luccams, one of which has now
rotted away (along with the roof!).
