This year started bleakly
for me as three kind, knowledgeable and entertaining friends died, two of them
related to the Hampshire Mills Group. On 1st
January the man responsible for me learning of, and joining HMG, died suddenly.
Harold Sanders was the Conservation Planning Officer at Wokingham Borough
Council where I started working with him in August 2001; he always took an
interest in the group‘s activities and was tickled pink when I took up this role
of editor. Bill Allford, my bagging mate at Longbridge Mill faded
away from us but, rather like the Cheshire Cat, his happy smile remains
constantly in our memories. See a tribute to Bill elsewhere, amongst the
many articles cramming this edition which should supply you with a good bit of
deckchair reading!

Spotlight on Calbourne Watermill
The long
history of Calbourne Watermill near Newport on
the Isle of Wight is brought up to date as a
super place for the whole family to enjoy
visiting. It is still a flour producing
mill with quite a range to suit all tastes.
This year Tony and Sally Chaucer are branching
out with a 3 day festival of music, which is
billed as a family friendly event, and they are
calling it:
The Rhythm Tree International Music Festival
16th - 18th July 2010
Why not add
this treat to an Island visit and see all the
other attractions there too, including, the Arts
and Crafts Unit which houses a pottery; a small
war museum as well as the rural life museum, and
when you need to slake your thirst, enjoy a
cuppa in the café before browsing the gift shop.
Mmmm, something there for everyone…………..
