In September John Mears and I were
treated to tickets for this very
enjoyable rally, courtesy of HMG
member, Alan Cullen. A cold but
lovely, sunny day with a good
headwind, on large grassy fields,
provided us with an amazing array of
stationary engines, ancient rural
vehicles and retro 1940s ones plus
lots of ‘nostalgia’ stalls
containing bric-a-brac through the
decades. The milling connection for
me was made with the static
machinery and the farm’s swinging
sign as in the photographs. Am I
correct in assuming the Bentall
Mills would have/could have been
driven by waterwheels or sails via
belt drives originally?
If you enjoy a mental trip back to
yesteryear then look out for this
rally next year. Put on by the
Sussex Weald Stationary Engines
Society the venue is Wattlehurst
Farm in Surrey. Many thanks Alan
for a memorable day out in the
countryside.
Sheila.
