Reading Matters ~ Reading Matters ~ Reading Matters

Gone with the Wind Windmills, and those around Tring. by Ian Petticrew and Wendy Austin.

HMG have been sent a copy of this book by the authors which is now in our library and Alison Stott has kindly written this review of it.

It is a delightful book, with clear and easily-understood descriptions of how everything works in a mill.   It has a good mixture of research and entertaining snippets of history and I think would be a ‘good read’ even for someone who knew nothing at all about mills… and of course for those of us who are mill enthusiasts it is a real page-turner.   There are plenty of good illustrations and at the back a section of colour plates.  The authors’ research covers descriptions of long-lost windmills, types of windmills:  how they work and the work of the miller and the millwright, plus further chapters give details of five windmills local to Tring, four of which are still standing.   For lovers of literature, one section is devoted to prose extracts and poems in praise of windmills.  All proceeds from the sale of the book go to charities in Tring, including Tring and District Local History Museum Society.   It costs £14 including post and packing. Cheques payable to J. Petticrew, 62 Grove Road, Tring, HP23 5PD

Millers and Methodists  by Chris Mesley   sub titled  'Leighton Buzzard's First Steam Mill' [No ISBN] published by Leighton Buzzard and District Archaeological and Historical Society 2010.  Price: £4.50.   Reviewed by Mick Edgeworth.

This is a book more for the family historian than for milling enthusiasts. It is the story of the milling families the Flemons, the Bransoms, Rickards, Brandons and the Dollimores  and their relationship to the Methodist faith.  In spite of the sub-title it does not limit itself to the steam mill but includes details of a watermill and windmills of Leighton Buzzard. It is a very readable book but my interest was limited by my lack of knowledge of the area.
