Passing through the mill……………….

Among the many visitors to Longbridge’s July milling was a lady with a competitive spirit where baking is concerned; we talked at length about the qualities of the various flour types, processes and baking recipes.  All of our flour buyers are encouraged to “Come back and tell me how you got on” and here is a delightful letter from that July lady received by email after an exhausting day at Kingsclere Gardening Association’s Annual Show in August:

Hello Sheila, Well, today was the day of the show. I entered lots of classes including the bread class. As you will see from the attached photo, I was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ for the loaf. I used a version of your Doris Grant loaf with Muscovado sugar and, of course, the Longbridge Mill flour. I practised several times until I got the thumbs up from the children who are always very candid in their criticism! I did try to make bread in a plant pot, but could not get it right and good enough for the show.  I was awarded first prize for my raspberry jam, second prize for my apricot jam and third prize for my bramble jelly, all very nice with the bread. Sadly did not win any more trophies today. The ladies of the Garden Club were formidable competition. Still I was very pleased with my winnings. Regards  Annette.

Well done, Annette, and thank you for sharing your results with us.  Tea at your place sounds yummy.

John Silman wishes Annette luck with our flour……. and here is her Kingsclere award. Pic. 3 & 4 show Sussex Mills Group members perusing the Hampshire and Mills In Art displays in the Library of the Mills Archive during their July visit.

The Mills Archive Trust’s list of volunteers swelled this year with several students and job-seekers joining for work experience.  This meant the massive amount of items waiting to be catalogued were sorted and dealt with at a much more rapid pace as the fluent computer literati worked their way through some of the major collections.  Volunteer numbers have shrunk a little as some have found jobs or gone to university.  The benefits have worked for both them and the Archives as the workers gained useful experience for their cvs  and the Archives’ catalogue entries soared.
