through to the entrance.
2. Who was John
Lofting and what type of mill did he build on the
Thames at Marlow in Buckinghamshire?
Mr Lofting,
originally from Holland, came to Marlow via an
Islington mill to build a Thimble Mill alongside two
other existing mills (paper and corn). Greater
water power from the middle of the River Thames
increased output to (apparently) 2 million metal
thimbles each year. Pictured is said to be a typical
Lofting thimble. John Lofting also invented a fire
tender (horse drawn) and one can be seen in Marlow’s
museum.
3. What did
Donald Peers sing about in the 1950s?
Nellie Dean (You’re
My Heart’s Desire) was written in 1905 for Gertie
Gitana and Donald Peers repeated Gertie’s 1907
recording success 50 years later.
It had
become popular in the UK as a pub
song,
particularly the chorus (There's an old mill by
the stream, Nellie Dean…).
Who was Nellie Dean?
She, Ellen Dean, is the main narrator of Emily Brontë’s
novel, Wuthering Heights but the song bears
no relation to the novel’s plot.
