Headley Mill Repairs

Dave Plunkett

Work started on 22 October 2018.  A local contractor brought large scale pumping plant onto site and moved and cleaned substantial mud and silt from the two tunnels.  This allowed a good visual inspection of the tunnels with little water.  From this I prepared a repairs report for the owners, and a report to SPAB, for gaining grant aid for the mud clearance expenditure.

On 29 October there was further inspection to establish the cause of the water leakage into areas of the wheel chamber and next door below the mill office floor.  Scale drawings were prepared (see below) and technical advice was given by member Paul Bracey.

Repointing of the smaller tunnel (right on the plan) started in November and is continuing, one day per week, assisted by Peter Mobbs and Charlie Fraser-Fleming.  After each day’s work the pond is refilled and the tunnel tested for leakage by Richard Ellis.  We still have a little way to go to resolve all the leakage issues. Our goal is to have a dry base on which to mount the bearing for the new oak wheel axle, to replace the old one which has rotted badly.
