On
Wednesday 3 August the usual work party had a break
from Longbridge to work at Hockley. The floating
grass-like weed in the headrace which had been
puzzling me for some time had grown a few flowers
and identified itself as Sparganium emersum (unbranched
bur-reed) as opposed to Sparganium erectum (branched
bur-reed). Ivor cleared the hydrangea off one of
the windows and exposed the rotten timber of the
window frame. It looked quite good before he did
it! We also lifted a pane of glass on the stones
floor which had slipped and had admitted some
tendrils of the same hydrangea.
